iPhone 3G now available in Malaysia
Couple of my pals were asking today about buying the latest iPhone 3G here in Malaysia.
Fortunately a few good business minded souls have popped up around doing just that. The 8GB is going for RM3399 wheres the 16GB model is priced at RM3699 and comes in 2 colors. Black or White.
I would love to get my hands on one but for now the price is way beyond my budget 
. Guess I’ll have to save up or hope for a kind soul to donate one to me 
But wait, there is still hope. According to Irwan iPhones 3G from NZ are legally unlocked so there is no violation of the warranty terms. Also, the price floats around RM2500.
Shot a few mails to my pals over at NZ, let’s see what they say.

1. iWorld – One thing’s for sure, their site is freaking impressive.
2. iMalaysian – Price is even higher. RM 4500

just to share, check out Australia Optus telco, they offer fully unlocked iphone 3g for around RM2400, where AUD720+80(unlock fee) = AUD 800.

What does the term “locked” and “unlocked ” mean ? can someone explain pls
Tim, unlocked phones can work anywhere in the world with diff carriers. Locked phones are normally lock down to one provider or band.

Wesley : Iphones in USA are sold at US$199 (depending on the outstdg tenure of existing contadct) but comes with a 2-year locked up contracts with AT&T. Without contract, the new 3GS are priced US$599 for 16Gb and US$699 for 32GB. The arrangements are the same in Msia where iphones are exclusively tied up with Maxis. You have to purchase the iphone AND choose one of the ridiculously expensive ivalue contracts. Maxis will sell the iphone at full price but as in USA and almost all around the world (with exception Brussel, Italy & HK), the iphones are locked, meaning that you cannot use the phones other than the original service provider and/or original country of purchase. Iphones can be “unlocked” (i.e. known as jailbreak”) via software and chg of hardware. There are some jailbreakers in Msia (just surf the net). However, future upgrades of iphones OS (operating system) e.g. the most recent is 3.0 (very exciting upgrade!) cannot be done on online (in itune) for these “jailbreak phones” You hv to resort to the jailbreakers.
Dear all : Gtechnology is almost and certainly a SCAM! They will require some downpayment and promise you to “courier” over to you “within 24 hours”. Remember what your mommy told you about the fool and his money ! Try http://www.iworld.com and http://www.imalaysian.com as more reliable iphone suppliers (note : I am not related to them!). I cannot be certain but iphones from Singtel (down south !) are said to be factory unlocked (as indicated by Iphone Malaysia), which means that the phones can be used in Msia ! This is wonderful for someone like me who travels a lot, allowing me to insert the local sim cards into the iphones. the other benefit is off course not being locked to a particular service provider. CAN SOMEONE ABSOLUTELY TELL ME WITH CERTAINTY THAT SINGTEL’S IPHONE ARE FACTORY UNLOCKED ? if this is true, then great news for all of us as Singtel has just hinted that the 3GS will launched soon in Spore. I would not be surprised if Maxis will follow suit shortly.
