XPS M1330 now Ubuntu ready

28 Jan
2008

Dell’s top of the range notebook and currently also the best notebook from Dell, the XPS M1330 is now being shipped pre-installed with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). The Ubuntu powered XPS notebooks are currently only available in Germany, UK, France and Spain. Hopefully Dell expands it’s Ubuntu on Dell range to Malaysia soon. The use of Linux in Asia is constantly growing and one might find this an ideal business opportunity. Don’t you think so Dell?

Linux on Dell has been a big hit among it’s customer and potential customers as seen on Direct2Dell. The biggest requests on Dell’s community sites direct2dell and IdeaStorm have been to get Ubuntu on more hardware and made available around the globe.

Dude, XPS m1330 available in MY now.
But the Inspiron 1720 has 17′ 1440×900 & full sized keyboard.
Which should I go for?

Just worried about linux support on the Inspiron

Go for the XPS, currently the best. Also look at HP for similar specs, chances are the price is lower.

If you prefer AMD, then HP has a broader choice.

Best in what sense?

I think I may stick to dell, cos i’ll take their 3 year complete cover. Its a laptop, there’s only so few things you can replace :(

Both will have
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T7250 2.0Ghz,2MB Cache
Has Intel VT (xen my people ;) )

XPS m1330
1. Design wise its awesome
2. Has HDMI & VGA out
3. Video Card comes with 128MB GDDR3
4. Only 13.3′ (1280×800) screen
5. 2 stereo outs / 1 line in
6. 2 USB ports

Inspiron 1720
1. Plain jane im-a-beige-box design
2. Video Card comes with 128MB GDDR2
3. S-Video & VGA out :P
4. Full Size Keyboard with Numeric Keypad
5. 17′ Display (1440×900)
6. 5 USB 2.0 connectors

Hopefully when I call them, I can get Vista & works n stuff wiped out.

Opinions round 2 please ;)

I dunno, the Inspiron has better screen res. Being plain, it’s open for a custom design… :) 5 USB connectors… the video card is ok, as well. And you’re a geek, not a gamer. :)

It’s a 17′! Why would someone wanna lug that around?

Stick with the 13′ and output the video to your 24′. :)

A good compromise is the XPS M1530, 15.4′ with 1440×900
Sigh.. I think its time i checked out some HP deals again.

It comes down to you man, they all the same.

Just hope for a good deal and settle on a suitable size vs weight ratio for you. :)

o ya, make sure not to get and intel based graphics card. You will need a Vbios hack to get them to work well. Nvidia will be the best…
